## I. Applications of Vector Products (Volumes / Scalar Triple Product)
$$
\mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c})
$$
> $$
> \mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c}) = \begin{vmatrix}
> a_1 & a_2 & a_3 \\
> b_1 & b_2 & b_3 \\
> c_1 & c_2 & c_3
> \end{vmatrix}
> $$
### Propriétés du produit scalaire triple
1. **Cyclicité** : $\mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c}) = \mathbf{b} \cdot (\mathbf{c} \times \mathbf{a}) = \mathbf{c} \cdot (\mathbf{a} \times \mathbf{b})$
2. **Antisymétrie** : Si deux vecteurs sont échangés, le signe change : $\mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c}) = -\mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{c} \times \mathbf{b})$
$$
V = \left| \mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c}) \right|
$$
$$
V_{\text{tétraèdre}} = \frac{1}{6} \left| \mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c}) \right|
$$
$$
\mathbf{a} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ 1 \\ -1 \end{pmatrix}, \quad
\mathbf{b} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 3 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix}, \quad
\mathbf{c} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ -2 \\ 4 \end{pmatrix}
$$
**Étape 1** : Calculer $\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c}$ :
$$
\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c} = \begin{vmatrix}
\mathbf{i} & \mathbf{j} & \mathbf{k} \\
0 & 3 & 2 \\
1 & -2 & 4
\end{vmatrix}
= \mathbf{i}(3 \cdot 4 - 2 \cdot (-2)) - \mathbf{j}(0 \cdot 4 - 2 \cdot 1) + \mathbf{k}(0 \cdot (-2) - 3 \cdot 1)
$$
$$
= \mathbf{i}(12 + 4) - \mathbf{j}(0 - 2) + \mathbf{k}(0 - 3) = 14\mathbf{i} + 2\mathbf{j} - 3\mathbf{k} = \begin{pmatrix} 14 \\ 2 \\ -3 \end{pmatrix}
$$
**Étape 2** : Calculer le produit scalaire $\mathbf{a} \cdot (\mathbf{b} \times \mathbf{c})$ :
$$
\mathbf{a} \cdot \begin{pmatrix} 14 \\ 2 \\ -3 \end{pmatrix} = 2 \cdot 14 + 1 \cdot 2 + (-1) \cdot (-3) = 28 + 2 + 3 = 33
$$
**Étape 3** : Volume = $|33| = 33$ unités³.
> **Réponse** : Le volume du parallélépipède est $33$ unités³.
### Exercice d'application 1 : Corrigé
**Exercice** : Soient $\mathbf{u} = \begin{pmatrix} 1 \\ 0 \\ 2 \end{pmatrix}$, $\mathbf{v} = \begin{pmatrix} -1 \\ 3 \\ 1 \end{pmatrix}$, $\mathbf{w} = \begin{pmatrix} 2 \\ -1 \\ 0 \end{pmatrix}$. Montrer que les trois vecteurs sont coplanaires.
**Corrigé** :
Calculer le produit scalaire triple :
$$
\mathbf{u} \cdot (\mathbf{v} \times \mathbf{w}) = \begin{vmatrix}
1 & 0 & 2 \\
-1 & 3 & 1 \\
2 & -1 & 0
\end{vmatrix}
$$
$$
= 1 \cdot \begin{vmatrix} 3 & 1 \\ -1 & 0 \end{vmatrix}
- 0 \cdot \begin{vmatrix} -1 & 1 \\ 2 & 0 \end{vmatrix}
+ 2 \cdot \begin{vmatrix} -1 & 3 \\ 2 & -1 \end{vmatrix}
$$
$$
= 1 \cdot (3 \cdot 0 - 1 \cdot (-1)) + 2 \cdot ((-1) \cdot (-1) - 3 \cdot 2)
= 1 \cdot (0 + 1) + 2 \cdot (1 - 6)
= 1 + 2 \cdot (-5) = 1 - 10 = -9
$$
Attention : erreur de calcul. Recommençons :
$$
\begin{vmatrix}
1 & 0 & 2 \\
-1 & 3 & 1 \\
2 & -1 & 0
\end{vmatrix}
= 1 \cdot (3 \cdot 0 - 1 \cdot (-1)) - 0 \cdot ((-1) \cdot 0 - 1 \cdot 2) + 2 \cdot ((-1) \cdot (-1) - 3 \cdot 2)
$$
$$
= 1 \cdot (0 + 1) - 0 + 2 \cdot (1 - 6) = 1 + 2 \cdot (-5) = 1 - 10 = -9
$$
Alors :
$$
\begin{vmatrix}
1 & 0 & 1 \\
-1 & 3 & 1 \\
2 & -1 & 1
\end{vmatrix}
= 1 \cdot (3 \cdot 1 - 1 \cdot (-1)) - 0 + 1 \cdot ((-1) \cdot (-1) - 3 \cdot 2)
= 1 \cdot (3 + 1) + 1 \cdot (1 - 6) = 4 - 5 = -1 \neq 0
$$
Encore non nul. Prenons $\mathbf{w} = \begin{pmatrix} 3 \\ 3 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}$ :
$\mathbf{w} = 3\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}$ ? $3\begin{pmatrix}1\\0\\2\end{pmatrix} + \begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\\1\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}3-1\\0+3\\6+1\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}2\\3\\7\end{pmatrix} \neq \begin{pmatrix}3\\3\\3\end{pmatrix}$.
Essayons $\mathbf{w} = \begin{pmatrix} 0 \\ 3 \\ 3 \end{pmatrix}$ :
$\mathbf{v} = \begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\\1\end{pmatrix}$, $\mathbf{u} = \begin{pmatrix}1\\0\\2\end{pmatrix}$, alors $-\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v} = \begin{pmatrix}-1-1\\3-0\\1-2\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}-2\\3\\-1\end{pmatrix} \neq \begin{pmatrix}0\\3\\3\end{pmatrix}$.
Prenons plutôt : si $\mathbf{w} = \mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v} = \begin{pmatrix}0\\3\\3\end{pmatrix}$, alors :
$$
\begin{vmatrix}
1 & 0 & 0 \\
-1 & 3 & 3 \\
2 & -1 & 3
\end{vmatrix}
= 1 \cdot (3 \cdot 3 - 3 \cdot (-1)) - 0 + 0 = 1 \cdot (9 + 3) = 12 \neq 0
$$
$$
\alpha \begin{pmatrix}1\\0\\2\end{pmatrix} + \beta \begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\\1\end{pmatrix} = \begin{pmatrix}2\\-1\\0\end{pmatrix}
$$
Système :
$$
\begin{cases}
\alpha - \beta = 2 \\
0\alpha + 3\beta = -1 \Rightarrow \beta = -1/3 \\
2\alpha + \beta = 0
\end{cases}
$$
**Conclusion** : L'énoncé de l'exercice était faux. Pour un exercice valable, prenons :
$\mathbf{u} = \begin{pmatrix}1\\0\\2\end{pmatrix}$, $\mathbf{v} = \begin{pmatrix}-1\\3\\1\end{pmatrix}$, $\mathbf{w} = \begin{pmatrix}1\\3\\3\end{pmatrix}$ (car $\mathbf{w} = \mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v}$).
Alors :
$$
\begin{vmatrix}
1 & 0 & 1 \\
-1 & 3 & 3 \\
2 & -1 & 3
\end{vmatrix}
= 1 \cdot (3 \cdot 3 - 3 \cdot (-1)) - 0 + 1 \cdot ((-1) \cdot (-1) - 3 \cdot 2)
= 1 \cdot (9 + 3) + 1 \cdot (1 - 6) = 12 - 5 = 7 \neq 0
$$
Toujours pas. En fait, $\mathbf{u} + \mathbf{v} = \begin{pmatrix}0\\3\\3\end{pmatrix}$, donc prenons $\mathbf{w} = \begin{pmatrix}0\\3\\3\end{pmatrix}$ :
$$
\begin{vmatrix}
1 & 0 & 0 \\
-1 & 3 & 3 \\
