# Applying Artificial Intelligence to improve on working and living standards
## Objectifs et prérequis
This chapter aims to equip Upper Sixth ICT students with a comprehensive understanding of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and its application in enhancing working and living standards. Students will learn the foundational concepts of AI, ethical considerations, key techniques, machine learning principles, system development processes, integration strategies, and the role of computer networks in AI deployment. By the end of this chapter, learners should be able to critically evaluate AI applications, design basic AI-informed solutions, and discuss societal impacts with reference to Cameroonian and African contexts.
Prerequisites: Basic understanding of computer systems, programming fundamentals (variables, loops, conditionals), data representation, and introductory knowledge of algorithms from Lower Sixth ICT. Familiarity with internet usage and digital tools is assumed.
## Introduction
Artificial Intelligence (AI) refers to the simulation of human intelligence processes by machines, especially computer systems. These processes include learning, reasoning, problem-solving, perception, and language understanding. In Cameroon and across Africa, AI is increasingly being applied to address challenges in healthcare, agriculture, education, and governance, thereby improving working conditions and living standards. For instance, AI-powered diagnostic tools are being piloted in rural clinics to support overburdened healthcare workers, while predictive analytics help smallholder farmers optimize crop yields. This chapter explores AI not as a futuristic concept but as a present-day tool with tangible socio-economic implications, grounded in ethical responsibility and technical feasibility.
## I. The concept of artificial intelligence
### Context and definition
Artificial Intelligence emerged as a formal discipline in 1956 at the Dartmouth Workshop, where John McCarthy coined the term. AI encompasses systems designed to perform tasks that typically require human intelligence. It is not limited to robotics but includes software-based systems that perceive environments, learn from data, and make decisions.
> AI is the branch of computer science concerned with creating systems capable of performing tasks that normally require human intelligence, such as visual perception, speech recognition, decision-making, and language translation.
AI can be categorized into narrow (or weak) AI, which excels at specific tasks (e.g., facial recognition), and general (or strong) AI, which remains theoretical and would possess human-like cognitive abilities across domains. Current applications are exclusively narrow AI.
### Key facts and historical context
- 1950: Alan Turing proposes the Turing Test as a criterion for machine intelligence.
- 1997: IBM’s Deep Blue defeats world chess champion Garry Kasparov.
- 2011: IBM Watson wins Jeopardy! against human champions.
- 2016: Google’s AlphaGo defeats Lee Sedol in Go, a milestone in deep learning.
In Cameroon, AI adoption is nascent but growing. The Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications launched the National Digital Economy Strategy in 2020, identifying AI as a priority sector. Initiatives like the AI Cameroon community promote local research and talent development.
### Causes and consequences
The rise of AI is driven by three converging factors: exponential growth in computational power (Moore’s Law), availability of big data from digital interactions, and advances in algorithmic efficiency, particularly in neural networks.
Consequences include increased productivity in industries, automation of routine tasks, and new job categories in AI development and data science. However, risks involve job displacement in sectors like manufacturing and customer service, algorithmic bias, and privacy erosion. In agrarian economies like Cameroon’s, AI offers potential to reduce post-harvest losses and improve access to financial services via credit scoring models, but only if deployed inclusively.
### Vocabulary to retain

- Cognitive computing
### Example exam question and plan
**Question:** Explain the concept of Artificial Intelligence, distinguishing between narrow and general AI, and discuss two ways AI can improve living standards in rural Cameroon.
**Plan:**
I. Definition of AI and its origins (Turing Test, Dartmouth 1956)
II. Narrow vs. general AI: characteristics and current feasibility
III. Application 1: AI in agriculture (e.g., crop disease detection via smartphone images)
IV. Application 2: AI in healthcare (e.g., triage systems in understaffed clinics)
V. Conclusion: Balancing potential with ethical considerations
## II. AI Ethics and Responsible Use
### Context and definition
As AI systems influence decisions affecting lives—such as loan approvals, hiring, or medical diagnoses—ethical frameworks become essential. AI ethics addresses fairness, accountability, transparency, and the prevention of harm. Responsible use ensures AI aligns with human rights and societal values.
> AI ethics is the study of moral principles and responsible practices in the design, development, deployment, and use of artificial intelligence systems to prevent harm and promote equity.
Core principles include beneficence (doing good), non-maleficence (avoiding harm), autonomy (respecting user choice), justice (fair distribution of benefits), and explicability (ability to understand and explain outcomes).
### Key facts and frameworks
- 2017: Asilomar AI Principles developed by the Future of Life Institute.
- 2018: EU publishes Ethics Guidelines for Trustworthy AI, emphasizing human agency, technical robustness, privacy, transparency, diversity, societal well-being, and accountability.
- 2021: UNESCO adopts the Recommendation on the Ethics of Artificial Intelligence, the first global standard-setting instrument on AI ethics.
In Cameroon, while no national AI ethics law exists yet, the 2020 Cybersecurity and Cybercrime Law includes provisions on data protection relevant to AI. Organizations like the African Union’s Digital Transformation Strategy (2020–2030) advocate for ethical AI adoption continent-wide.
### Causes and consequences
Ethical concerns arise from AI’s opacity (“black box” problem), potential for bias in training data, and misuse in surveillance or deepfakes. For example, facial recognition systems have shown higher error rates for darker-skinned individuals due to unrepresentative datasets.
Consequences of unethical AI include discrimination, loss of public trust, legal liability, and social unrest. Conversely, ethical AI fosters innovation with public acceptance, long-term sustainability, and inclusive growth. In Cameroon’s context, deploying AI in national ID systems or electoral processes demands rigorous ethical safeguards to prevent exclusion or manipulation.

### Example exam question and plan
**Question:** Discuss two ethical risks associated with AI in public services in Cameroon and propose one measure to mitigate each.
**Plan:**
I. Risk 1: Bias in AI-driven social welfare allocation (e.g., favoring urban areas due to training data bias)
II. Mitigation 1: Use diverse, locally representative datasets and conduct fairness audits
III. Risk 2: Lack of transparency in AI used for immigration or law enforcement decisions
IV. Mitigation 2: Mandate explainable AI models and public disclosure of system logic
V. Conclusion: Ethics as a prerequisite for trustworthy AI deployment
## III. AI Techniques and Intelligent Systems
### Context and definition
AI techniques are computational methods that enable machines to exhibit intelligent behavior. These include rule-based systems, search algorithms, evolutionary computation, and neural networks. An intelligent system integrates one or more AI techniques to perceive, reason, learn, and act in complex environments.
> An intelligent system is a computer-based system that uses AI techniques to perform tasks requiring adaptation, learning, or decision-making in dynamic or uncertain environments
